The Rise of Quality Decaf
The wonderful result of the rising demand for high-quality decaf is that we are seeing new specialty blends popping up in cafes and retail spaces everywhere. It does however, make it hard for decaf drinkers to know what’s good and what’s not.
I taste decaf for a living, and it’s an exhilarating time to experience what’s out there. When I hit the road, it’s feels like I’m on a decaf adventure and nothing fills my cup more than a barista who wants to talk about their decaf.
Cafe's Changing Decaf Tune
I seek out the better cafes, one’s that appear to take their decaf seriously. I ask questions and I jot down notes which lately, I’ve been musing, might be appreciated by our Decaf Haus community.
So, here it is. The beginning of a growing list of decafs I have loved and liked (the murky ones I’ve loathed don’t make the list).
Coffee Expert Disclaimer!!!
I recognise that cafés aren't the controlled environments of cupping room tastings (which i also love - so much fun!). Many factors can influence how a coffee is served—how it’s stored, it's freshness, the machine, the barista, an espresso vs a milk-based coffee – the list goes on and on.
My feedback is shared in good spirit, and while a decaf may occasionally miss the mark, if it shows promise, I’m always open to giving it another try and revisiting my "review". Also, this is just a guide, my guide – drink whatever makes you feel great!
☕Reverence Coffee Decaf
Who are they: Melbourne based Reverence Coffee Roasters have been doing their specialty thang since 2012. They’re committed to single-estate micro-lot coffees and creating artisanal blends.
The decaf: is all toffee and sweetness and silky smooth with notes of chocolate and honey. A decadent delight that suited milk. I had only wished I had enjoyed it with a pastry.
The process: Swiss Water
Did it fillith my cup? Delicious
☕Silva Coffee Roasters
Who are they: Silva Roasters, based in the gorgeous Warburton of the Yarra Valley, are all quality. Locally focused, small batch cred with strong social and environmental direction with beans and farmers.
The decaf: An exceptionally exciting drop that suits my palette to a tee (or coffee!). It’s sweet, nutty, and juicy, with a citrus bite I adore. It's delicate and balanced.
The process: Swiss Water (also organic😊)
Did it fillith my cup: Easy and enjoyable
☕Genovese
Who are they: A Melbourne family owned and run 1970’s original that still source, blend and roast small batch, quality bespoke beans for serious coffee drinkers.
The decaf: Easy to drink but a quality drop. It is medium-bodied with good acidity and a full cocoa chocolatey mouthfeel.
The process: Swiss Water
Did it fillith my cup: Yeeesss, super yum
