The Surge of Specialty Decaf Coffee

The Surge of Specialty Decaf Coffee

I just left a coffee event feeling an incredible buzz—and it wasn’t from caffeine.

The event was all about decaf, which is pretty rare in the coffee world. Decaf is usually seen as a side option, but this room of Melbourne roasters were giving it some serious attention.

It really felt like we’re entering a new era for specialty decaf, and that’s exciting.

The event was hosted by Bennetts, an Australian family-owned business that has been importing green beans for three generations. They invited Frank Dennis, the CEO of Swiss Water, to share insights on their trademarked decaffeination method with local roasters.

In the decaf world, Swiss Water Process is the go-to name. They’re synonymous with quality and safety, known for offering chemical-free decaf that customers can trust.

There’s been a huge surge in the decaf market, especially in the specialty decaf sector. The reason is simple: new decaf drinkers aren’t new to good coffee. They want the same great taste, just without the caffeine.

It’s mostly young people leading this shift, and when asked, they’re choosing decaf for a better quality of life—specifically to improve sleep and reduce anxiety.

It’s similar to the no-alcohol trend, where people still want the enjoyment, taste, quality, and culture of the drink but without the negative health effects.

And don’t think that decaf drinkers are any less concerned about traceability, fair trade, and sustainability than their caffeinated counterparts. These are the hallmarks of specialty coffee, and discerning decaf drinkers seek them out.

It was genuinely exciting to hear Frank Dennis, the CEO of Swiss Water Process, talk about the industry and their work in Canada (yes, Canada—not Switzerland!). They’re committed to greener manufacturing and sustainable practices. Swiss Water recognizes that coffee often comes from vulnerable communities, and they’re dedicated to positively impacting the health and empowerment of the coffee-growing communities that provide us with our favourite drink.

I’m thrilled that Swiss Water Process is setting the standard in the decaf world because people are asking, "How is my coffee decaffeinated?" and "Where are my beans from?"—and roasters are listening!
